A South Los Angeles high school was placed on lockdown for part of the school day after a student was found on campus with a gun on Wednesday.
According to Thomas Alva Edison Middle School officials, the incident began around 11:10 a.m., when school administrators and Los Angeles School Police arrested a student after he was found with an unloaded firearm and live ammunition.
According to EMS Director Salvador Velasco, the closure lasted about half an hour. The student’s parents were informed of the incident, but no further information was given about possible punishment.
LA School Police will provide additional campus patrols for the rest of the week “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a letter to parents of EMS students.
“We take the safety and security of our students and our campus very seriously,” the letter said. “This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to discuss with their children the importance of using common sense and avoiding dangerous activities.”
No further information was provided.
