South Station Tower will open in Boston next year. Take a look inside

BOSTON – The South Station Tower will transform Boston’s skyline and the city’s transportation when it opens in 2025.

The opulent 51-storey tower site was conceived decades ago and after years of delays build finally started right before the pandemic.

“It just shows our commitment to the built environment and that we stick with projects we believe in, that we don’t give up and we are persistent.” said Sean Sacks, the Senior Managing Director of Hines, a global real estate investment manager.

Hines came up with the idea for the rising tower. Sacks believes it will be a game changer for the transportation industry.

“What is really special for commuters is the ease and speed with which they can make the connections between the rail, the subway and the bus station,” he told WBZ-TV.

History South Station

South Station has a long history as a major transportation hub in Boston.

It opened in 1899 and quickly became the busiest train station in the country, serving 38 million passengers a year. But decades later, passenger numbers had declined due to the popularity of automobiles, and in 1962 South Station’s owner declared bankruptcy.

The MBTA, which had been nearly dormant for years, eventually took over the facility and finally reopened it for rail travel in 1989. Now commuters are ready for the first major transformation in more than 30 years.

Zuidstation is changing

The changes you can expect include:

• An increase in bus terminal capacity by 50%.
• More convenient connections between the bus station and other forms of transport at Station Zuid.
• A reduction in congestion on train station platforms.
• The Grand Concourse will be a striking gateway to the city, protecting passengers from the elements.

“So people can gather outside, be covered and not get rain or snow,” Sacks said.

In addition to these improvements, so will the tower luxury living under the Ritz Carlton brand. There will be 166 homes on floors 36 to 51.

Cindy Dwyer of the Collaborative Companies is working on the details of the tower, which she says will feel like an adult playground.

“It’s a great concept. Live, work, play and commute all in one place,” Dwyer told WBZ.

There is exquisite interior design, unparalleled views and easy access to the Massachusetts Turnpike and Logan Airport. The tower literally creates a new neighborhood in Boston. It will feature a restaurant on the ninth floor, a private club on the 36th floor and a sprawling one-acre sky park on the 11th floor.

“You can really see how much green space there is and how much use,” Dwyer said.

The South Station Tower is expected to open in the summer of 2025.
