Jan. 10—Spokane police on Friday identified the four officers who fired their weapons at a man, killing him, on Dec. 29 at a North Hill apartment complex.
A press release from the Spokane Police Department named officers Matthew Stewart, Daniel Valencia, Garth Craigen and Will Mitchell as the four involved in the shooting of 29-year-old Joshua Musselman.
Police responded early this evening to the Northcliff Terrace Apartments, 840 W. Cora Ave., after someone reported a man firing a weapon that resembled a rifle, according to an earlier message from the department.
When officers arrived at the apartment, they found he matched the report’s description and determined Musselman posed a threat, Spokane Police Chief Kevin Hall said at the time. He declined to comment on what prompted the officers to fire their weapons.
The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled last month that Musselman died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Musselman was convicted of attempted rape of a child, assault, vehicular prowling and malicious mischief, according to court records.
His sister has since hired attorney Rondi Thorp, who has a history in Spokane of representing other men’s families in wrongful death lawsuits against the city.
