Donald Trump’s campaign said the Republican presidential candidate is safe after shots were fired “in his vicinity” in Florida on Sunday.
A US Secret Service spokesperson also confirmed that Trump is safe after reports of shots fired.
Initially, few details emerged.
“There are no further details at this time,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said in a brief statement, as did Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi in a message on X.
What exactly had happened and whether Trump himself was in danger at any point was initially completely unclear. Reports in the American media were contradictory.
The former president was at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida on Sunday afternoon when the incident occurred.
No official information yet
While the New York Post reported shortly after the incident that the shots were not aimed at Trump, CNN reported that emergency services assumed Trump had been the target. There was no official confirmation.
The police will hold a press conference.
According to the New York Times, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach police said the incident occurred on the grounds of the golf club.
“The intent is unknown at this time,” Teri Barbera, a spokeswoman for the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, told The New York Times.
According to Barbera, a “person of interest” has been arrested.
The White House has been informed
In Washington, the White House said President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have been briefed.
“The President and Vice President have been briefed on the security incident at the Trump International Golf Course, where former President Trump was playing golf, and are relieved that he is safe. They are being updated regularly by their teams,” the White House said in a statement.
On July 13, a gunman shot Trump from a nearby rooftop during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.
Trump was wounded by a bullet in his right ear and the assailant was shot dead by security forces shortly after. One man died and two others were injured at the rally.
