Stabbing in Jonesville scheduled for preliminary hearing in court

JONESVILLE — A Jonesville man accused of repeatedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend in the head and neck on Dec. 23, 2023, is tentatively scheduled for a criminal preliminary hearing in 1st Judicial Circuit Court at 1 p.m. July 8.

Dustin Thomas Collins, 20, was arraigned on a charge of assault with intent to murder following a hearing earlier this year in 2B District Court.

The preliminary hearings were postponed to allow more time for evidence to be gathered.

Collins is accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend, the mother of his child, more than a dozen times in the face and head with a pocketknife.

The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 23, 2023, when Collins allegedly stabbed the 19-year-old woman during a domestic dispute at Heritage Lane Apartments in Jonesville, according to witnesses at the scene.

During an interview with Michigan State Police after his arrest, Collins told police he changed his mind and didn’t want to kill her after he stabbed her. According to Hillsdale County District Attorney Neal Brady, he called 911 to report the crime.

According to neighbors, the couple had a troubled relationship and had recently separated.

Medical responders from the Hillsdale City Fire Department and paramedics from Reading Emergency Department responded to the scene and the woman was taken to Hillsdale Hospital. She has now been fired again.
