State Fire Marshal releases Memorial Day safety tips

May 24—OLYMPIA — There were 10,658 incidents in Washington state that required fire or ambulance response during the 2023 Memorial Day weekend in Washington state, according to a statement Wednesday from the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office. These incidents resulted in $3,489,572 in property losses.

“Please keep fire safety in mind as we honor those who have fallen,” the statement said.

The statement urged the public to follow these tips to stay safe during this year’s Memorial Day:

-Do not drink and drive.

—Make sure your vehicle is safe and well maintained.

-Drink a lot of water.

-Use the correct SPF sunscreen.

—Take a first aid kit with you when you travel.

—Store and cook food at the correct temperature.

—Practice proper grilling safety techniques.

—Never leave a fire unattended.

-Extinguish any fires properly.

— Always ensure a child-free zone when cooking.

—Leave sufficient distance between heating equipment and structures.
