The police chief of the Southport Police Department requested that Indiana State Police investigate after an officer shot a man early Monday morning.
At approximately 12:29 a.m. on Oct. 28, an on-duty Southport police officer attempted a traffic stop near the 2000 block of Appleton Drive when the driver of the vehicle exited the car and fled, according to the ISP news release.
During the foot chase, the officer believed the man had fired one shot. Police say it is unclear whether the man fired a shot at the officer or somewhere else.
After hearing the shot, the officer began shooting at the man, striking him with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, state police said.
The man was taken to a local hospital.
No officers or uninvolved people were injured in the shooting.
The officer who fired their weapon was wearing a body camera and it activated during the shooting.
The man is being held on outstanding warrants and is expected to be charged by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office in the coming days.
