State Senator Anthony Kern was injured in a car accident in South Dakota while visiting family

State Senator Anthony Kern was injured in a car accident on Saturday.

Arizona Senate President Warren Petersen announced on the social platform X that Kern had been in a serious car accident but was in stable condition.

The accident happened in South Dakota, where Kern was visiting family, said Kim Quintero, communications director for Senate Republicans. She said Kern is in the hospital but is communicating with family and in stable condition.

Kern’s sister Margaret Kern Trout confirmed on Facebook that her brother was in a “serious car accident” over the weekend and asked for prayers.

Kern, R-Glendale, is wrapping up his first term in the Senate. He previously served three terms in the State House. This fall, he opted to run for a congressional seat rather than seek a return to the Capitol, but lost the Republican race for Congressional District 8 to Abe Hamadeh.

Social media posts from both Petersen and Arizona Senate Democrats wished Kern a speedy recovery.

Kern is one of 11 people charged in connection with the “fake voter scheme” stemming from Arizona’s 2020 presidential election. Kern has vowed to fight Attorney General Kris Mayes’ charges.
