State to hold hearings on Duke’s plan to raise electricity rates

June 14 – Duke Energy filed with state regulators for an operating plan that would increase electricity rates by 6.5% over three years.

Supervisors have scheduled public hearings to give residents a chance to comment on the plan

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) has scheduled public hearings for September 4 at 6 p.m. at the MidPoint Library, 125 S. Broad St., Middletown; and 6 p.m. September 10 at Cincinnati City Hall, Council Chambers, 801 Plum St.

An electricity security plan – or ‘ESP’ – is an operational plan for an electric utility that sets prices for electricity generation and can cover investments in distribution and updates to the electricity grid.

Duke Energy Ohio, Inc., a subsidiary of Duke Energy, serves approximately 700,000 customers in Southwest Ohio.

Comments from those who testify at the hearings will be included in the file, the PUCO said. A hearing will also take place on October 22 at the PUCO offices in Columbus.

On April 1, Duke Energy Ohio formally submitted an application for the electric generation supply plan with a “standard service offering” from June 1, 2025 through May 31, 2028.

For electricity services, the “standard service offering” or standard rate is the price for electricity for customers who do not participate in a government aggregation program or self-select a retail electricity supplier.

Written comments may also be addressed to the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, 180 E. Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio, 43215.

Public comments may also be submitted online, and all comments should refer to file number 24-278-EL-SSO.

A copy of Duke’s filing and the notice scheduling the public hearing is available at www.PUCO.ohio.gov by clicking on the links to “Docketing Information System” and searching for case 24-278-EL-SSO.

Last August, the PUCO approved a new Electricity Security Plan for AES Ohio, establishing higher electricity rates for Dayton-area homes for the next three years.

AES Ohio’s net increase is $5.33 per month for a resident using 1,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per month, according to the PUCO, which oversees electric utilities and other state utilities.
