A 29-year-old Kahului man was arrested Wednesday on Maui on outstanding warrants related to illegal fishing and firearms charges, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Enforcement.

Sy Alapai was arrested by DOCARE officers conducting routine traffic checks on Ka’ae Road. Alapai was allegedly in possession of a “loaded bolt action rifle and a loaded semi-automatic rifle in his vehicle.” According to a DOCARE press release, Alapai’s car also had expired license plates and a safety inspection.

DOCARE agents allege that Alapai had previously engaged in “illegal cast-netting activities” in an area known as Rivermouth. The nets Alapai used Wednesday are legal, but his weapons were in plain sight in his car, state officials said.

DOCARE officers contacted Maui police and discovered that there were three outstanding arrest warrants in Alapai for two cases involving illegal fishing nets and a traffic violation.

Alapai was arrested on three outstanding warrants and two firearms charges, state officials said. A court hearing is pending. The guns and 18 rounds of ammunition were seized and entered into evidence.
