President-elect Donald Trump is expected to appoint Stephen Miller as his deputy chief of staff for policy at the White House, a source with knowledge of the transition team’s plans said Monday.
Although Trump has not yet made his choice public, newly elected Vice President JD Vance appeared to confirm the news in a post on X when responding to CNN’s report on Miller’s choice for the role.

A staunch hardliner on immigration policy, Miller worked in the White House during Trump’s first term, serving as both director of speechwriting and senior adviser to the president.
Miller has been advocating for an extreme right-wing immigration policy for years. Before Trump lost to President Joe Biden in 2020, Miller had previewed plans to push an even more restrictive immigration agenda. He told NBC News at the time that a second Trump term would prioritize limiting asylum subsidies and work visas, sanctioning and banning “sanctuary cities” and expanding the travel ban to include stricter screening of visa applicants.
He would likely play a major role next year in carrying out Trump’s pledge to enforce mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.
