Store clerk shoots and kills armed robber, sheriff says

A store clerk in Chesterfield County shot and killed an armed robber Saturday evening, the sheriff announced Monday.

According to a news release, officers were called to an armed robbery at the Highway 9 Mini Mart & Tobacco store on Highway 9 in Pageland around 8:45 p.m. A man was shot dead in the store.

The store clerk told officers the man entered the store and pointed a gun at his head and demanded money.

The clerk drew his gun and shot the robber several times.

Officers confirmed this happened after reviewing the store’s surveillance video.

Sheriff Cambo Streater said South Carolina law states: “A person who is not engaged in an unlawful activity and who is assaulted in another place where he has a right to be, including his place of business, has no duty to to withdraw and has the right to stand firm and to meet force with force, including deadly force, if he reasonably believes that doing so is necessary to prevent death or great bodily harm to himself or another person, or to prevent the commission of a violent crime.

“Sheriff Streater strongly supports the rights of our citizens to protect themselves,” the news release said.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division processed the scene.
