Storms and hail are likely this week, Kansas City. When can severe weather occur?

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the work week will start with several chances for showers and thunderstorms in the Kansas City area.

There is some uncertainty in the weather Monday morning as the atmosphere remains unstable, but there is no clear sign of what, if anything, will bring rain to the area, the weather service said in its forecast discussion.

Skies will be mostly cloudy and temperatures will rise into the low 80s, which is typical for this time of year in Kansas City.

Some uncertainty remains in the forecast for the afternoon and evening, but the weather service said strong storms will be possible, especially southeast of a line stretching from Kansas City to Kirksville.

Gusty winds and some small hail are possible in the developing storms, but severe weather is not expected.

Heavy storms are expected on Tuesday

According to the weather service, skies will be partly sunny into the mid-80s on Tuesday with temperatures slightly warmer.

An approaching cold front from the west gives a greater chance of severe weather in the evening, especially after 5 p.m.

Large hail up to an inch in diameter and damaging winds of more than 57 mph (93 km/h) are the main threats from the storms. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out, the weather service said.

“Expect scattered storms to evolve fairly quickly into a liner system, developing southeastward over time,” the weather service said. “For initially discrete storms, large hail could be the main severe threat before developing into a severe wind threat.”

The storms could bring between a half and an inch of rain. The weather service said the heaviest rainfall will fall in eastern Kansas and western Missouri, with smaller amounts falling further east.

Dry weather expected later in the week

The rain is expected to end early Wednesday as the storms move out of the area.

Sunny skies are forecast for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, with temperatures in the mid-80s.

There is a small risk of storms returning Friday night to Saturday night, with a 30% chance of rain.

Otherwise, skies will be mostly sunny with temperatures in the low 80s. Sunday will be mostly sunny weather, with highs around 80 degrees.
