Dark storm clouds that put a damper on the 4th on Broadway evening concert and fireworks show in Lubbock on Thursday had the positive effect of much-needed rain.
They also had a rainbow border, adding a splash of color to the Independence Day evening sky that could have been done without the city-sanctioned fireworks.
A vibrant double rainbow was seen by many in Lubbock as the powerful storm line moved east out of the city shortly before 9 p.m.
The National Weather Service in Lubbock, for its part, issued a special statement about the visual display. In a social media post, it confirmed that the tower camera at South Loop 289 showed a “beautiful and vibrant double rainbow as storms begin to exit the city of Lubbock!”
The storms, which put on a light show of their own as they moved through the area, brought much-needed rainfall to Lubbock and surrounding communities. The West Texas Mesonet site in southeast Lubbock recorded 1.67 inches of rain, with 0.95 inches at Lubbock Christian University and 1.18 inches at Slaton. Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport recorded just 0.09 inches Thursday night.
