Stormy week ahead for Kansas City. Here’s what you need to know about severe weather

The Kansas City region is in for a stormy week, starting with the threat of strong southerly winds on Monday, the National Weather Service said.

Wind gusts could approach 40 miles per hour for an hour or two in eastern Kansas and western Missouri on Monday afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

“Stronger and more widespread high winds are expected on Tuesday,” the weather service said. “A wind advisory is in effect Tuesday for eastern Kansas to far western Missouri, including the KC metro, where gusts of 45-50 mph are expected.”

Summer-like temperatures will also continue, with temperatures in the low to mid 80s on both days.

In warm and windy weather in combination with dry conditions, there is an increased risk of fire. The weather service said neither Monday nor Tuesday would be a good day for outdoor burning.

Severe weather coming

A cold front is expected to move across the region on Wednesday, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and night. The weather service said some storms could be strong or severe.

According to the weather service, an inch or more of rain is possible from the storms.

The weather service’s Storm Prediction Center has placed the metro area and the southwest corner of the Kansas City forecast area at a slight risk of severe weather for Wednesday.

Temperatures are expected to be around 70 degrees on Wednesday.

Cooler weather for the weekend

“Expect cooler temperatures beginning Thursday through the weekend,” the weather service said. “Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees above normal, which will be a nice relief from the warmer temperatures expected earlier this week.”

Normally, Kansas City sees temperatures around 60 degrees this time of year.

Rain chances return this weekend as the next storm system moves from Saturday to Sunday.
