BOSTON – A powerful storm system will cause a major outbreak in Massachusetts on Wednesday, complete with periods of heavy rain, localized flooding and damaging winds.
There are numerous hazards and warnings associated with this very anomalous storm system.
The Storms Prediction Center has placed areas south of the Mass Pike at a “marginal” risk of severe thunderstorms.
How Much Rain Will Massachusetts Get?
According to the Weather Prediction Center, almost all of New England is at “slight risk” of excessive rainfall. We are forecasting between 2 and 3 inches of rain for most of the area.
Warning for strong winds
Finally, the National Weather Service issued a high wind warning for all of eastern Mass. Wednesday afternoon and evening.
The strongest winds will be along the immediate coastline, including southeastern Massa. Southerly winds will peak between 45 and 100 km per hour in this area late Wednesday.
A little further inland, between 128 and 495 and west through Worcester County, winds will be between 55 and 50 miles per hour Wednesday afternoon and evening.
Storm timeline for Boston
Scattered showers will begin Tuesday night. We do not expect heavy rain showers.
There will be persistent rain with some heavy rain showers from Wednesday morning to afternoon.
There may be a brief break on Wednesday afternoon and evening before the heaviest rain showers push through between 6pm and midnight. This is when we are most at risk of flooding and wind damage.
Storm brings warmer weather
Temperatures will also be quite mild on Wednesday. Highs will rise into the mid-60s across southern New England, approaching some all-time records.
Thursday will be a much calmer day and it looks like we can stay dry (and cool) all weekend.
Our next chance for some rain showers would be late Sunday or early next week.
