Heading into the weekend, the Bay Area is expected to receive another heavy dose of rain starting Friday evening, accompanied by gusty winds and damaging winds.

The National Weather Service said in its daily forecast discussion for the Bay Area that “impactful” rain would return from Friday evening into Saturday, with flooding concerns through Sunday. A flood watch was in effect for the North Bay from 2 p.m. Friday through 4 p.m. Sunday as excessive rainfall could flood rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone areas.

Although most of the flooding problems occurred in the North Bay, a combination of high surf and high tides also prompted the Weather Service to issue a coastal flooding advisory for both the low-lying areas of the North Bay and the coastline from the San Francisco Bay until January 1, 2018. pm Monday.

Farther north, in Mendocino County, a flood warning was in effect for the Russian River near Hopland from late Friday through Sunday morning. The weather service said the river will rise above flood stage to 18 feet early Saturday afternoon. Flood stage is 15 feet.

The arrival of the next storm front will be accompanied by gusty winds from the south beginning Friday evening through Saturday, especially along coastal areas. The weather service said the winds were expected to blow down trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages. .

A high wind warning was issued from 10 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Saturday for the hills in Marin County and western Sonoma County, the North Bay coast, San Francisco and the Peninsula coast. Southerly winds were expected between 25 and 35 km/h with gusts up to 60 km/h. The wind warning was preceded by a wind advisory in effect Friday from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. for expected wind speeds between 20 and 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph.

After fairly low rainfall in the range of a few hundredths to a few tenths of an inch early to mid Friday morning, a broader band of showers moved into the Northern California coast late Friday morning and early afternoon. The showers should start in the North Bay and spread to the rest of the Bay Area during the late afternoon and evening, reaching the Central Coast overnight Friday through Saturday.

The Weather Service said the most intense rain was expected Friday into Saturday, with the highest totals in far northern Sonoma County. Rain totals were expected to reach 2 to 3 inches in the North Bay between Friday and Saturday, and 3 to 4 inches in the coastal and inland mountains of North Bay.

For the rest of the Bay Area, rain totals will range from 0.5 to 1 inch, slightly higher in the coastal mountain ranges.

While drier conditions were expected by Sunday, higher rain chances were expected on Monday, with generally lower precipitation amounts than the weekend storm.
