Student caught recording women in the bathroom at UNC Charlotte

UNC Charlotte campus police arrested student Luke Castaneros, 18, after they say he went to the women’s restroom at Colvard North and recorded them in the restroom.

“Honestly, in today’s world, something like that isn’t surprising anymore,” said Avery Flynn, a student at UNC Charlotte. “It’s still incredibly disappointing.”

According to the university’s police log, someone caught Castaneros and called the police. He allegedly confessed to officers.

The police use an advanced camera system throughout the campus to help identify and capture suspects.

Nevertheless, many students find it important to take safety into their own hands.

“Bathrooms are a bit of a scary place because there are a lot of stalls and I always check to see if there are people in the stalls,” said Sophia Diciaula, a student.

“You have to be aware of your surroundings and be prepared for anything. It is a sad reality,” said Amira Hartman, a student.

School officials would not go into details about the case but said a suspect would typically be suspended immediately.

Castaneros made his first court appearance Thursday afternoon. He was given a $50,000 unsecured bond for felony secret peeping.

When he returns to campus, he is arrested for trespassing.
