NEW YORK – A water main break on the Upper West Side disrupted subway service on the busy B and C lines Wednesday afternoon. The A and D services were also affected.
B and C trains were initially suspended in both directions due to the break when water poured into the tracks. A train service was shut down between 125th Street and Chambers Street. D train service was suspended between 161st Street and Herald Square. Passengers were asked to use lines 1, 2, 3, which caused some congestion on those lines. Trains 2 and 3, usually express trains, made local stops. The MTA also said trains 4 and 5 may be delayed because they share the track with diverted trains.
The break took place at 103rd Street and Central Park West just after 2 p.m. The water was turned off around 3 p.m., although disruptions continued in the subway.
Water was taken from the tracks.
On a B train, some passengers had to transfer, but that went smoothly, according to the MTA.
The pause and disruptions occurred when large crowds were expected to flock to the Upper West Side for inflating the balloon.
“When I first got here, there were cops and everything blocking traffic,” said commuter Alex Febles. “I’m going home, but of course that’s not possible right now.”
“I tried to go there, but they taped everything up in yellow,” said commuter Faranah McKoy. “I’d really like to get home because I’m tired and I’m going to Jersey. So my commute has just started.”
