Sugar factory explosion kills eleven people in Tanzania

Eleven people were killed and two others injured in an explosion at a sugar factory in Tanzania’s eastern Mvomero district, authorities said.

The explosion occurred after a heavy steam pipe burst as workers started production on Wednesday evening, the fire and rescue team said.

In addition to Tanzanians, citizens from Brazil, India, China and Kenya are also among the dead, officials said.

Alex Mkama, the regional fire and rescue commissioner, said his team was investigating the cause of the incident.

The explosion happened around 1 a.m. local time on Thursday [23:00 GMT Wednesday] in a factory run by Mtibwa Sugar Estates Limited, one of Tanzania’s leading sugar producers.

All the deceased were electricians and machine crew who were working in the control room at the time, Mr Mkama added.

Following the explosion, Mtibwa Sugar Company suspended all production activities at the factory.

The bodies of the deceased workers have been shifted to the factory hospital mortuary.
