SANTA CRUZ COUNTY — A wildfire that broke out Saturday evening near the Santa Cruz-Santa Clara county line has forced some people to evacuate and close one lane, officials say.

Cal Fire Santa Cruz said the Summit Fire broke out near Highway 17 and Summit Road.

As of about 8:30 p.m., the fire has burned about an acre and forced Santa Cruz sheriff’s deputies to evacuate Alta Vista Lane. Fire officials said no other evacuations were conducted and no evacuations were indicated on Santa Cruz County evacuation maps.

Firefighters say they are making good progress on the fire, but power lines are down.

The California Highway Patrol has closed the far right lane of Highway 17 southbound near the Glenwood border. It is not yet known when the roadway will reopen, but motorists are urged to avoid the area. CHP officers are also urging people driving through the area not to stop and take photos.
