Sunny or swampy? What National Weather Service says Columbus can expect on Memorial Day

While intense heat and storms will grip much of the country, the greater Columbus area will experience more or less ideal outdoor temperatures for boating, barbecues, park adventures or pickleball.

According to the University of Arizona, the “thermal neutral zone” – outdoor temperatures between 68 degrees and 77 degrees – is the sweet spot for comfort where people can easily maintain their core temperature. And, with a few exceptions, Memorial Day weekend will fit into that range.

Temperatures today will peak at 84 degrees this afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 30% chance of showers between noon and 5 p.m. The night temperature is 61 degrees with a light wind from the north.

On Sunday, temperatures will rise into the low 80s with easterly winds up to 10 mph, according to the NWS. There is a 30% chance of rain on Sunday, with temperatures also expected to be in the low 70s.

Monday may offer the most comfortable weather, with the NWS forecasting a high near 78 degrees. But there is an 80% chance of precipitation, which could amount to about half an inch of rain.

According to the NWS, wind speeds from the south could reach 20 miles per hour, with gusts up to 20 miles per hour.

The Columbus should not experience any potentially severe storms forecast over parts of the Central and Southern Plains through Saturday.
