Sunny weather continues in Philadelphia region as unusually dry spell extends

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — If you like dry days with lots of sunshine, low humidity, and pleasant temperatures, then this forecast is for you as our spectacular September continues! In fact, since August 18th (almost 4 weeks), we have only had two days of measurable rainfall in Philadelphia (Sept. 2nd and 7th), and even then the total rainfall was just 0.36 inches!

NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center’s extended outlook is for drier conditions than normal across the Delaware Valley through September 24. We are not currently experiencing drought conditions, but there are unusually dry conditions across the region. While we may see a few showers creep into the forecast by the middle of next week, it does not appear to be anything too severe at this time.

In the region, temperatures are 83 degrees in Philadelphia, 76 degrees on the coast and 81 degrees in the Lehigh Valley.

As for the tropics, Francine made landfall in Louisiana around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of 100 mph. While the storm will weaken over the next few days, moisture will continue to soak much of the Lower Mississippi Valley into the weekend. We will continue to monitor this closely, but at this time the storm does not appear to be moving far enough north to impact the Philadelphia area.

The same dominant high pressure system that is responsible for our great weather will be the same weather system that is sending Francine west of our region and through the Mississippi Valley. We may see some bands of high clouds off the outer edge of Francine, but that will likely be the extent of it.

With fall in the air, it’s hard to believe we’re still in summer, although temperatures will continue to rise this week. The autumnal equinox (the beginning of fall) is less than two weeks away on September 22nd at 8:44am. On that day, we’ll have equal hours of daylight and darkness, but our daylight hours will start to shorten rapidly after September 22nd, and the days will feel even shorter on November 3rd when Daylight Savings Time ends and we turn our clocks back one hour, making our mornings brighter but our evenings darker. The only silver lining is that extra hour of sleep.
