Suspect in attack dies after hitting tree while trying to flee Columbus police

A man’s attempt to flee from Columbus police ended in a fatal car crash in South Linden Wednesday night.

Columbus police were dispatched to the area of East 23rd and Gladstone Avenues around 6:21 p.m. to arrest a man wanted for aggravated assault in a stabbing, police spokesman Sgt. Joe Albert said. Officers arrived to find the suspect in a silver Chevrolet Impala, he said.

Officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the suspect fled and a police chase ensued, Albert said.

According to Albert, the suspect drove into a dead-end road, then reversed and rammed the Impala into a police car.

The suspect fled again and police continued the pursuit. Shortly after, Albert said, the suspect somehow lost control of the car and crashed into a tree at high speed at East 22nd and Medina Avenues.

The man suffered “serious injuries,” Albert said. He was taken to Ohio State University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:06 p.m. His identity was not released Wednesday night pending notification of his family.

The officers in the police car involved in the chase and rammed by the suspect were not injured, Albert said.

Columbus police have requested the Ohio State Highway Patrol to investigate the fatal crash. No other information was immediately available Wednesday evening.
