Suspect of shooting in Hagen, Germany charged with attempted murder

German police on Sunday charged a 34-year-old man with attempted murder after he allegedly shot four people, including his wife, in the western German city of Hagen.

The suspect was arrested earlier on Sunday after a 24-hour manhunt by police. He was discovered in a rural area south of Hagen after tips from local residents, a police spokesman from the nearby city of Dortmund said.

The suspect’s wife was among those injured in Saturday’s shooting, police in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia said. The four victims have been hospitalized, two of whom, including the suspect’s wife, are in life-threatening condition.

Police said the man, a Turkish national, shot his wife in the head in a residential building in Hagen, probably due to a family dispute.

He then drove to a nearby hair salon and shot three more people before fleeing the scene on foot.

Dortmund police quickly took over the large-scale search and set up a task force. A police helicopter was also deployed in the search, which initially focused on a nearby supermarket and a wooded area.

The man was finally arrested on Sunday, shortly after police and prosecutors launched a public search using the fugitive’s name and photo.

No weapon was initially found on the suspect. However, after his arrest, he told police where it was.

No further details have been released about the identities of the three other victims. All four victims are being treated in different hospitals.

Police emergency services are parked in a cordoned off street. Several people were injured in shooting incidents at two locations in the western German city of Hagen, police said on Saturday, while the suspected perpetrator was still on the run. Justin Brosch/dpa
