Suspect, police dog shot in Midlands as authorities try to execute a warrant

A K9 officer and a suspect were shot during an incident in Newberry County on Tuesday.

Deputies from the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office and agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division went to serve a fugitive arrest warrant Tuesday near Gravel Road in the Prosperity area, the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.

The suspect was reportedly found at a relative’s home, the sheriff’s office said. A police dog confronted the suspect in the home. The suspect had a gun and shot at officers, striking the dog, the sheriff’s office said. Officers returned fire at the suspect, “eliminating the threat,” the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect was taken to an area trauma center, while the K9 officer was taken to a veterinary clinic. Updates on the condition of the suspect and the dog were not available early Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect was not named in the sheriff’s office statement. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has been asked to assist in the investigation.
