Swansea man found guilty of civil unrest during Capitol riots on January 6

Michael St. Pierre, a former Fall River grocer and Swansea resident, has been found guilty of four charges related to his participation in the January 6, 2021 riot at the Capitol. He was found not guilty of three other charges and was released on his own recognizance.

St. Pierre waived his right to a jury trial and was tried by Judge Jia M. Cobb in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Former Fall River Mayor Jasiel Correia II will remain in prison for his entire sentence after a federal judge rejected his bid for parole.

Correia, 32, is serving what Judge Allison Burroughs called a “generous” six-year sentence after being convicted of wire fraud and extortion worth more than $800,000.

Fall River firefighter wins years-long battle against PFAS in gear

Fall River firefighter Jason Burns has long sidelined as an activist and is speaking out about the dangers of using firefighting equipment made with PFAS.

In August, Massachusetts became the second state in the country to ban the use of PFAS in equipment, a victory Burns and other activists had sought for years.

So what’s next?

“We have to figure out the transition,” Burns said. ‘Let’s enjoy the moment and then regroup. Where are we going? Because we are not ready yet.”

Kelly Furtado will become Fall River’s first female police chief

Saying she accepted responsibility “not just for myself, but for every woman in law enforcement and every young girl with big dreams,” Fall River Police Capt. Kelly Furtado became the city’s first female interim police chief on Tuesday.

Furtado told police and media at the Government Center that she wanted to change the direction of the FRPD, with an emphasis on community policing.

She takes over leadership of the department on an interim basis following the reassignment of Capt. Paul Gauvin, who led the FRPD as chief from May 2022 to September 27.

A new coffee shop is percolating at 524 S. Main St., getting ready to open next door to Glass House Smoke Shop +CBD.

Glass House Cafe was gearing up to make its debut this weekend.

Brandon Estacio, owner of the upcoming Glass House Cafe at 524 South Main St. in Fall River, will be in the store Thursday, October 3, 2024.

Owner Brandon Estacio, a Westport resident who grew up in the Fall River area, said he was looking for a “different” direction to take his additional retail space.
