Switzerland urges citizens to leave Lebanon as tensions rise

The Swiss government is calling on its citizens to leave Lebanon amid rising tensions in the region following the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the attack on a senior Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, in Lebanon.

The Swiss Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) wrote on Wednesday: “The risk of escalation has further increased… The FDFA advises Swiss citizens to leave the country on their own initiative, if this seems possible and safe.”

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon have been rising for months. Hezbollah has fired rockets into Israel, and Israel has responded with airstrikes in the neighboring country.

Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran have announced that they will take revenge for Haniyeh’s killing and blame Israel.
