(CBS-DETROIT) – Tailgating returned to Eastern Market Sunday – the first time since the deadly shooting on September 15.
In recent weeks, the market has been working with the Detroit Police Department to develop new policies.
Fans were in good spirits, even with the new policy.
“We just love the camaraderie here, how friendly the people are here and we just come to have a good time,” said Douglas Carter, a tailgater.
The shooting at the market in September claimed two lives. It started as an argument between a large group of people at shed 6.
“It’s a shame what happened a few weeks ago, but it hasn’t changed our minds about coming and enjoying ourselves because this is part of the experience,” said Alan Harnden, a Lions fan.
Since that tragic day, the market has created a new set of rules. Tailgating is not allowed in driveways, tickets are for assigned spaces only, one space is considered two parking spaces, no weapons are allowed, and lots close 60 minutes after the game. .
“It does reduce the number of tailgaters within the footprint, which helps control crowds a little bit, but it also ensures that safety vehicles can enter the parking lots and that people can also exit the parking lots safely if something were to happen. happen,” said Katie Trudeau, chair of the Eastern Market Partnership.
Another striking difference is the much greater police presence.
“I used to feel safe, but in today’s society when you see more presence, you feel safer,” said Gil Flowers, a tailgater.
The overall message from the fans is don’t be afraid to come out to Eastern Market to cheer on the Lions.
