Gunshots rang out at an apartment building in Madison, Wisconsin, on Sunday, wounding at least 10 people — including a teenager, police said.
Officers responded to a rooftop party at the Lux Apartments around 12:45 p.m. when dispatch alerted them to a shooting, officials said. When they arrived, dozens of people tried to run out of the building. A teenager with multiple gunshot wounds was bleeding in the street, Police Chief Shon Barnes said at a news conference, according to CBS News affiliate WISC.
“Officers were advised that there were likely additional victims in the building,” Barnes said during the news conference. As a result, the Madison police officers bravely ran up twelve flights of stairs to reach the roof, unaware of what they might encounter. They found a number of people in various stages of distress, and some even hid in a maintenance closet in an attempt to find safety.”

He said it was a miracle no one had died. The victims range in age from 14 to 23, officials said. Not all of the injuries were from gunshot wounds, but the local fire department said it took five victims to the hospital with gunshot wounds.
Some of the injured went to the hospital themselves. Police say none of the injuries are life-threatening.
According to police, it appeared that it was a targeted incident. Officers have not yet made any arrests. Officials also have not released a description of the shooter. Detectives are still talking to victims and witnesses and reviewing digital evidence, authorities said.
