Tempe Police Officer Praised for Curbing Drunk Driving Arrested for Drunk Driving

Tempe Police Officer Zachary Hyde, who has been recognized for his efforts to combat drunk driving, was arrested Friday for driving under the influence, Tempe police reported.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety notified Tempe police Wednesday morning of Hyde’s arrest for driving under the influence, which occurred while he was off duty, a news release said.

Tempe police suspended Hyde pending an internal investigation while DPS conducted the DUI investigation.

A Tempe police spokesman declined to provide further information about Hyde’s arrest.

On June 29, Hyde received a “Hero Award” from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a nonprofit organization that advocates for sober driving and supports victims of drunk driving accidents.

Hyde was seen with his award in hand, along with Tempe Police Chief Kenneth McCoy, at a MADD banquet with another Tempe officer.

“When we are made aware of a criminal investigation involving one of our officers, we take the matter extremely seriously,” the Tempe police spokesman wrote.

MADD did not immediately respond to The Arizona Republic’s request for comment on the reward for Hyde, given his arrest.
