PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Saturday’s sweltering weather was unbearable, but Sunday is expected to be even worse with severe weather ahead.

The extreme heat warning for Sunday has been upgraded to an extreme heat warning, with high dew point and high humidity increasing the heat and creating potential wind chills as high as 106 degrees.

In Philadelphia, today’s record high is 97 degrees, which hasn’t been broken since 1888, but as the day progresses, the city could break the record.

The forecast for today in Philadelphia is expected to reach 100 degrees, likely peaking at 4 p.m., after which temperatures are expected to drop quickly due to expected rain.

The Delaware Valley sees a small risk of severe weather, including damaging winds, heavy rain, small hail and even a few isolated tornadoes are on the table, especially tonight as a cold front brought along by low pressure hits the Northeast.

Some parts of the Delaware Valley broke or neared record highs on Saturday. Philadelphia topped out at 98 degrees yesterday, approaching the city’s record high of 100 degrees. Reading reached 101 degrees, beating the record of 96 degrees. Allentown also warmed to 98 degrees, breaking the record of 95 degrees.

Saturday night, temperatures around Philadelphia dropped into the 90s around 9 p.m., and the area didn’t cool until around 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

The heat wave is expected to break for a day on Monday due to wet weather that will cool the region.

Clouds will increase this afternoon around 4:00 PM, with isolated showers expected across Philadelphia and South Jersey between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

Heavy rainfall with potentially damaging winds is expected to occur around 11pm early Monday morning, but is expected to clear until the afternoon.
