The Kauai Humane Society said 11 dogs have found new homes on the mainland, thanks to a sponsorship that fully covers the cost of off-island adoptions.

Earlier this month, KHS offered free off-island adoptions for those who applied. KHS set a May 11 deadline for the program because animal cargo shipments are limited if temperatures get too high. Typically, off-island adoptions can cost $700 to $900.

The adoptees each weighed between 7.4 and 84 pounds and traveled to new families in Nebraska, New Jersey, Washington, Minnesota, Florida, California, Wisconsin, Arkansas and Arizona.

Many were part of the KHS program, which allows Kauai visitors to watch a dog for a day.

Keoki, a speckled dog formerly named Corn Chowder, was adopted by a family who took him on a field trip and learned about the sponsorship.

The nonprofit, like other shelters across the U.S., is struggling with shelter overcapacity, with kennels filled with more dogs than normal.

According to Cathy Bissell, founder of the BISSELL Pet Foundation, adoptions in the U.S. have declined while owner surrenders have increased sharply as families face economic and housing challenges.

BISSELL sponsored an “Empty the Shelters” event earlier this month with lower adoption costs in more than 40 states, including Hawaii.

There are still many dogs and cats available for adoption.
