NEW YORK– The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade The weather forecast was wet this year. New York City saw continuous rain all morningwhile areas north and west of the city brace for snow.
Fortunately, the wind turned out not to be a problem so that the balloons can fly.
It is a First Alert Weather Day as we monitor the timing and totals across the region.
Winter storm warning
A winter storm warning is in effect for western Ulster County, and a winter weather advice applies to Sullivan County, both through tonight.
In some places, as much as 10 centimeters of snow could accumulate. Within these two counties, average final totals will likely be between 2 and 6 inches.
The highest totals are at the highest elevations of the mountains above.
Rain during the parade
Elsewhere it is just a steady rain, sometimes moderate. Unfortunately, most of it fell right through the parade. Spectators were advised to bring their rain gear and even some hand/foot warmers as temperatures were stuck in the 40s and around 50 degrees.
The plus side was that the wind didn’t bother us much, which was good news for the balloons! Wind gusts reached around 25 km/h this morning, but will increase to 30-30 km/h this evening.
From mid-afternoon the rain will decrease and a dry evening is expected. Precipitation totals across the region are expected to be between 0.5 and 1 inch – something to be thankful for amid the ongoing droughtT. Once again winds will become gusty as the storm moves out.
As for high temperatures, just like the food served at Thanksgiving dinner, there will be a wide variety, ranging from the 50s along the coast to the 30s in the northwest suburbs. Central Park is right in the middle at 50 degrees.
Black Friday and beyond
The rest of the holiday weekend looks mostly dry, but colder. There is only a 10-20% chance of an occasional rain/snow shower on Black Friday. Otherwise, plan for a mix of sun and clouds all weekend.
Highs will be in the mid 40s tomorrow before dropping into the 30s and dropping to near 40 for the remainder of the weekend.
It looks like the cold temperatures will continue through the first week of December.
