‘The Bachelorette’ Breaks New Ground, Final ‘Suits’ Season Hits Netflix, ‘Despicable Me 4’ Ushers in a New Gru Era

Hello friends! I’m Kelsey, your guide to all things pop culture for Yahoo Entertainment, and this is the The Listour weekly roundup of what’s new and noteworthy. This week, my critical colleagues have recommended a slew of upcoming releases to watch, stream, listen to, read, and binge. I’m taking you through my favorites.

Gru, voiced by Steve Carrell, teams up with two new characters and his beloved henchmen in “Despicable Me 4.” (Universal Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection)

🎥 Despicable Me 4 returns to wreak havoc

  • When: Despicable Me 4 will be released in theaters on July 3.

  • What to know: After Gru’s family welcomes a moody new baby, they go on the run from an escaped criminal bent on revenge.

  • Steve Carrell and Kristen Wiig star in the first Despicable Me episode in seven years. We’ve seen the minions since then, of course!

  • I had “Happy”, the song by Pharrell Williams from Despicable Me 2, been in my head for a decade. He’s back for this soundtrack too.

  • Why I’m going to watch: Yahoo News Editor in Chief Jason Tuohey told me the film is great for kids and that Will Ferrell is the perfect villain.

🎥 Space Cadet makes a giant leap for women

  • When: Space Cadet will be released on Prime Video on July 4.

  • What to know: A Florida party girl accidentally ends up in astronaut training after padding her resume.

  • Rex, a bartender with a talent for invention, must join doctors, scientists and engineers to tackle the program’s academic and physical challenges.

  • Star Emma Roberts told me she is absolutely fascinated by space, but she would never want to be on a spaceship. She leaves that job to the professionals.

  • Why I would recommend it: The film embraces its wacky premise and provides plenty of hilarity, but also delivers a heartwarming message about pursuing your dreams no matter what life throws at you.

🎥 Maxxine beats Hollywood in the 80s

  • When: Maxxine will be in theaters from July 5.

  • What to know: Porn actress Maxine Minx moves to Hollywood to pursue her dream of a big break, while also avoiding the wrath of a serial killer.

  • It is the third part of the film by writer-director Ti West X trilogy, which follows two different rising stars, played by Mia Goth.

  • Kevin Bacon, whose character makes his debut in Maxxine, told me he wanted to join the project because he likes “well-shot, compelling films made on a budget.”

  • Why I would recommend it: Despite being a horror film, it’s a total blast. Goth stars an unforgettable, unconventional heroine, and the 80s film aesthetic is to die for — literally.

📺 The Bachelorette breaks new ground

  • When: The first episode of Season 21 airs July 8 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

  • What to know: Dozens of men vie for the favor of Bachelorette Jenn Tran, the series’ first Asian-American lead actress.

  • Yahoo Entertainment reporter Neia Balao told me that Tran has talked about his Vietnamese immigrant parents, and Neia is excited to see something different than the typical white American family experience on screen.

  • The casting announcement caused controversy as some viewers expected a fan favorite Bachelor education candidate to shine.

  • In a clip from the premiere, Tran chases away suitors who want to be famous above all else.

  • Why I’m going to watch: I’m cautiously optimistic that the show’s all-size-fits-all cast, a rarity, could start a trend.

📺 To take Season 9 finally makes his case clear

  • When: The final season of To take is now available on Netflix.

  • What to know: This legal drama, about a slick lawyer and an unlicensed legal genius, is one of the most-watched TV series of all time.

  • Although it is a USA Network program, To take’ popularity exploded when it became available on Netflix. However, the final season was not available — until now.

  • Meghan Markle’s role on the show may have been a crowd-pleaser, but her character left in season 7. Still, a lot happens in the 26 episodes that follow!

  • Why I’m going to watch: I have a soft spot for unscrupulous, fictitious lawyers.
