The best roller coaster in the country is in New Jersey… and it no longer exists

Great Adventure’s Kingda Ka has long been the gold standard for thrill seekers.

It’s so impressive that PlayNJ.com, a New Jersey gambling analysis site, just gave Kingda Ka a perfect score in its ranking of the best daredevil roller coasters.

The site tightens Kingda Ka’s complicated specifications.

It runs over 3,000 feet of track.

It reaches a speed of 125 km/h.

It stands at 456 feet tall.

Also stands completely still.

Six Flags, the park’s parent company, shut down the attraction early last month, ending the nearly two-decade-long act of terror.

What is the best roller coaster in the country?

PlayNJ.com this week named Kingda Ka the country’s ultimate daredevil roller coaster.

The gambling analytics site said it looked at 434 roller coasters across 113 US theme parks.

Kingda Ka earned a perfect score of 100 from PlayNJ.com, surpassing North Carolina’s Fury 325 – the longest roller coaster in the study at 6,500 feet – and Ohio’s Millennium Force, Orion and Top Thrill 2; Virginia’s Project 305; California’s Superman: Escape from Krypton and Goliath; and the Titan of Texas.

What happened to Kingda Ka?

Great Adventure’s towering roller coaster debuted in 2005 and quickly became a must-ride for casual roller coaster fans and enthusiasts.

But insiders have been suggesting for months that Six Flags, the park’s parent company, was plotting Kingda Ka’s demise.

As October drew to a close, roller coaster fans flocked to the park to ride Kingda Ka and began posting videos of “last rides.”

A few days later, Six Flags confirmed that the park’s most famous attraction was no longer operating. It closed Kingda Ka and is decommissioning the Green Lantern roller coaster as part of an expansion project already in the works.

An untitled ride should be ready for the 2026 season, and will come after the 2025 debut of The Flash: Vertical Velocity, which Six Flags Great Adventure is calling North America’s first super boomerang coaster.
