The chairman of the Tarrant Appraisal District review board is resigning just days before cases are heard

The chairman of the Tarrant Appraisal District Citizen Appraisal Board resigned this week.

An email obtained by the Star-Telegram showed that Nancy Sharpe, who served on the board for three years and was chairman for a year, resigned Monday.

Her resignation letter did not give a reason why she was resigning from her position. Sharpe did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday.

The assessment board is made up of citizens charged with mediating disputes between appraisal districts and taxpayers, often over the assessment of real estate.

According to the Tarrant Appraisal District website, people on the board can receive a maximum of $185 per day.

Sharpe’s resignation comes just days before the review board was set to hear cases involving property value protests.

It also comes nearly a month after the election of three new members to the assessment district’s board of directors. The board can appoint people to the citizen review board.

All three members elected to the nonpartisan board were endorsed by Republican District Judge Tim O’Hare. Their campaign promises included moving to property appraisals every three years – which experts have advised against – and limiting home assessment increases to 5% – which is currently not allowed by the state law. They will begin their service on July 1.

Sharpe’s resignation will be discussed Friday during a district board review meeting in the Fort Worth council chambers.

A district spokesperson told the Star-Telegram that Chief Appraiser Joe Don Bobbitt would not comment on the case until Friday.

The district sets property assessments and administers exemptions for tax purposes.
