The Coast Guard is suspending the search for a missing snorkeler off Kauai

The search for a visitor who went missing during a snorkeling excursion at Anini Beach was suspended this afternoon, Kauai County officials said.

Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, Kauai Police, the Kauai Fire Department’s on-duty battalion chief, Hanalei firefighters, ocean safety officers and Kaua ‘i Search and Rescue volunteers have been active since Sunday afternoon.

Officials say the missing snorkeler is a 58-year-old man who was visiting from Arizona. He was last seen near the back channel of Anini Beach at around 11.45am on Sunday.

A multi-agency search was first launched shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, when a group of snorkelers realized one person in their group had not returned to shore.

The search lasted until sunset on Tuesday and resumed at daylight today.

The USCG said it suspended its search at noon today.

The man, initially reported to be 59 years old, is now 58 years old, according to the USCG.

“It is never easy when we suspend the search for a missing swimmer and when we cannot provide complete closure to someone’s family,” Kauai Fire Chief Michael Gibson said in a news release. “Everyone involved has worked tirelessly for this reason and our sincere condolences go out to the man’s family.”
