The commander of the IDF’s Gaza division resigns over the October 7 attack

The commander of the Gaza Division of the Israeli Army (IDF), Brigadier General Avi Rosenfeld, has announced his resignation and takes responsibility for the Hamas attack from the Gaza Strip on October 7 last year.

“On October 7, I failed in my life’s mission to protect the border communities in Gaza. Everyone must take responsibility, and I am in charge of leading the divide,” Rosenfeld said in a statement.

“As part of taking responsibility as commander, I have decided to terminate my position and service in the IDF after thirty years of service,” he added. Rosenfeld’s resignation will take effect once a replacement has been appointed.

The head of Israel’s military intelligence, Aharon Haliva, announced his resignation in April.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Ronen Bar, head of the Shin Bet domestic intelligence service, previously accepted responsibility for the attack but remain in office. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has so far not accepted any personal responsibility.
