BERLIN (AP) — The death toll from flooding in much of southern Germany rose to six Wednesday as police recovered the body of a woman who had been missing since the weekend from a canal in Bavaria.

The 79-year-old was unable to return home after he was spotted cycling in Jettingen-Scheppach, near the city of Augsburg, on Sunday. A local resident saw her body in a canal on Wednesday, police said.

Persistent heavy rainfall led to widespread flooding this weekend. While the situation in southwestern Germany has now improved, water levels along the Danube in eastern Bavaria are only starting to decline gradually.

The bodies of four people killed in the floods were found on Sunday and Monday, three of them in flooded basements. Police reported a fifth victim on Tuesday, a driver whose body was recovered from a submerged car.
