The departure of the SS United States from Pier 82 in South Philadelphia has occurred postponed again.
Officials in Okaloosa County, Florida, said the plan to move the massive ship from South Philadelphia on Friday has been scrapped. County officials said a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico was reason enough to abort the mission.
The The ship was scheduled to leave Philadelphia waters Friday morning at low tide and towed to Mobile, Alabama, to be prepared for sinking.
“Like most large, multi-faceted operations, this move will involve multi-agency coordination. Dates, times and other logistics are subject to change to ensure the ship is moved safely,” a statement read in part Okaloosa County press release.
No new date has been scheduled for the relocation of the SS United States.
This is not the first time the ship’s move has been postponed. Last month is one A similar storm threw a spanner in the works.
The SS United States, a historic ocean liner that holds the speed record for the transatlantic crossing, has been at Pier 82 since 1996.
Plans to develop the ship into a hotel or casino never got off the ground. Last summer, CBS News Philadelphia learned of plans to sink the ship the world’s largest artificial reef.
A federal judge ordered the ship moved earlier after a dispute over its rental.
