The far-right AfD in Germany is bringing forward the party conference to January

The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is bringing forward its national party conference from March to January in light of snap parliamentary elections on February 23, co-party leader Alice Weidel said on Tuesday.

Weidel did not specify an exact date or location for the meeting, which will decide the anti-immigration and Russia-friendly party’s election manifesto.

The AfD is expected to officially nominate Weidel as a candidate for chancellor there.

Germany will go to the polls in just over three months, following the recent collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-left coalition.

Tuesday’s decision on an election date saw the parties get serious in their race to attract voters.

The AfD recently made huge gains in three eastern states that held regional polls, putting the AfD in a strong position ahead of snap federal elections.

In the last federal elections in 2021, the party received about 10% of the votes. According to the latest opinion polls, this is approximately 17% nationally.
