German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said he supports Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, despite criticism from NATO allies and Kiev.
“There is currently no peace with Putin, and yet we must keep trying and support Ukraine at the same time,” he told public broadcaster ARD on Sunday evening.
Less than 48 hours after Friday’s call, Pistorius said Putin showed “what he thinks about peace negotiations or a ceasefire.”
“He ordered civilian infrastructure in Ukraine to be bombed from the air in a way that hasn’t been seen in a long time,” referring to Moscow’s widespread attacks on the country’s power grid early Sunday.
