The German Green Party nominates Robert Habeck as its chancellor candidate

German Green Party delegates approved 96.48% of Economy Minister Robert Habeck as chancellor candidate for the upcoming elections during the party conference on Sunday.

Habeck will lead the election campaign together with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

“We’re going to fight the elections!” Habeck stated this in his acceptance speech.

Shortly before his appointment, Baerbock praised Habeck as “super-pragmatic,” saying he had maintained Germany’s course as economics minister in times of crisis and freed Germany from its dependence on Russia as an energy supplier.

Habeck was widely expected to win the nomination as he was not competing for votes with other candidates.

Germany is currently preparing for snap elections expected in February following the collapse of the governing coalition last week.
