German Development Minister Svenja Schulze was in Ukraine on Thursday to tout Berlin’s efforts to help citizens in the frigid months ahead.
“I traveled to Ukraine to hand over our winter package,” the minister said upon her arrival in the capital Kiev.
She said Russia’s goal in more than a thousand days of war has been to disrupt energy supplies, leaving people in the cold and dark. “That is why we have again mobilized extra money to rebuild the energy supply here.”
She added that this is essential for survival in winter temperatures.
During her visit, she plans to hold talks with government and civil society representatives. She also wants to visit various reconstruction projects. “I want to be here to see with my own eyes that the money is actually going where it’s needed,” she said.
This is Schulze’s second trip to Kiev this year and her fourth to Ukraine since the Russian invasion in February 2022.
