Germany’s rail service benefits from the thousands of football fans from across Europe who have traveled to the country to watch the Euro 2024 matches, ordering snacks and drinks on the train as they move from one match to the next.
Beer and sausage are particularly popular, according to railway company Deutsche Bahn, which announced details about the sale of bistros on board on Sunday during the first week of the European Championships.
Thirsty fans drank a total of 44,588 liters of beer between June 14 and 19, doubling the usual sales level, the company said.
Sausages on a roll were also particularly popular, with 7,105 orders, a turnover increase of 63%.
Sales of croissants, chili peppers, vegetarian chili peppers and focaccia also increased, the company said about the first week of the tournament.
According to a statement from the company, more than 3 million fans traveled on Germany’s high-speed ICE and IC trains at the time, accompanied by 150,000 staff members.
There were repeated disruptions on key routes, the company added, thanking “all fans for their patience and caution.”
Deutsche Bahn is the official mobility partner of Euro 2024 and in addition to the millions of fans, several teams, including Switzerland and Romania, also use their services during the tournament.
By comparison, host nation Germany will travel by bus to and from their matches during the month-long tournament in 10 German cities that runs until July 14.
