The German Vice Chancellor is in favor of deporting terrorists and criminals

German Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck has spoken out in favor of the deportation of suspected terrorists and dangerous persons who have emigrated to the country.

Habeck, a member of the Green Party, said anyone convicted of a serious crime such as murder should not enjoy the right to asylum in Germany, even if they violate the country’s law and order.

That could mean sending people back to countries considered unsafe, even though they may face persecution there.

“In plain language, this means that I think someone as the perpetrator of the police killing should be convicted, serve their sentence and then be deported,” Habeck said.

These comments refer to a recent violent attack in the German city of Mannheim, in which a knife-wielding migrant killed a police officer.

Habeck noted that the Ministry of the Interior is looking carefully at what is possible with regard to the deportation of serious criminals.

Interior ministers from all 16 German states will meet near Berlin on Wednesday to discuss immigration policy, including controversial proposals to allow the deportation of serious criminals and people considered Islamist extremists to countries such as Syria and Afghanistan.
