The Indianapolis Fire Department is battling four fires overnight, destroying several vacant homes

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Fire Department is battling several fires that broke out in Indianapolis on Sunday evening.

Between 9:30 PM on Sunday and 7:00 AM on Monday, IFD responded to four separate fires that damaged eight buildings, including seven residential buildings and one business.

With several fires concentrated in one part of the city, many firefighters responded to two of the calls and some fought three of the fires, said Rita Reith, Public Information Officer for the Indianapolis Fire Department.

House fire on Selago Drive – Sunday 9:36 PM

Around 9:36 p.m. Sunday, the Indianapolis Fire Department was alerted to a fire that broke out in a two-story home at 6336 Selago Drive in the Franklin Gardens neighborhood.

A fire broke out in the home after the family heard a loud booming noise coming from the garage, according to a social media post from IFD.

The homeowner told firefighters that he had been cooking with grease in the garage several hours earlier, according to IFD.

After noticing the smell of smoke coming from the home, the family of five, three adults, a child, an infant and their puppy, evacuated the property while firefighters responded to the scene, IFD said.

The first unit arrived on scene at approximately 9:41 p.m. The fire had spread from the garage to the attic of the home, but firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control about 30 minutes after arriving. No one was injured, but the family was injured. displaced due to the fire.

A total of 12 IFD units were deployed to the site.

Home fires in Hamilton Avenue – 12:54 AM Monday

At approximately 12:54 a.m. Monday, IFD received calls about several fires breaking out at 434 North Hamilton Avenue near the former Indiana Women’s Prison.

When IFD’s first unit arrived around 12:57 p.m., they noticed three vacant two-story residential buildings that were under construction, according to IFD.

Firefighters tried to control the fires, but by 2:55 a.m. the fires had destroyed the three houses.

A total of 16 units were sent to the scene. One firefighter was slightly injured.

After the fire was under control, firefighters conducted a preliminary search of the property and noted that the buildings did not have working smoke detectors, IFD said.

IFD and IMPD Fire are investigating the cause of the fire.

Home fires on College Avenue – 3:48 a.m. Monday

At approximately 3:48 a.m. Monday, IFD received calls reporting that a fire had broken out in two vacant residential buildings near 2016 North College Avenue.

According to IFD, the fire threatened to spread to a third building.

The first unit arrived around 3:52 a.m. and found the two vacant buildings engulfed in flames, according to IFD.

Firefighters prioritized protecting the occupied house next to the two burning houses, hoping to reduce the spread of damage to the surrounding area.

According to IFD, IFD had the fire under control at 5:20 a.m. after an hour and a half of fighting. The occupied home saw only minor damage to the exterior of the building. However, the two vacant houses were destroyed by the fire.

A total of 23 IFD units were dispatched to the scene, with only one firefighter suffering minor injuries and being transported to IU Health Methodist Hospital, according to IFD.

After the fire was under control, firefighters conducted a preliminary search of the property and noted that the buildings did not have working smoke detectors, IFD said.

IFD and IMPD Fire are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Sun Shine Breakfast House and Grill – Monday 6:12am

At approximately 6:12 a.m., IFD received calls that a fire had broken out on the roof of Sun Shine Breakfast House and Grill at 5116 West 38th Street.

The first unit arrived around 6:17 a.m. and noticed the fire on the roof of the business, according to IFD.

Firefighters contained the fire by 6:34 a.m. and completed primary and secondary searches of the building.

A total of nine IFD units, two Speedway fire units and one Pike Township unit were dispatched to the scene. No one was injured as a result of the fire, according to IFD.

After the fire was contained, firefighters conducted a preliminary search of the property and believed the fire started on the roof near the HVAC unit, IFD said.

IFD and IMPD Fire are investigating the cause of the fire.
