On Saturday, in a recent development in Karen Read’s murder case, Judge Beverly Cannone denied special prosecutor Hank Brennan’s request to use Karen Read’s parents’ phone records.
Judge Cannoe denied that motion, stating: “Despite the derailed arguments set forth in the supporting memorandum and an oral argument, the affidavit in support of the motion is prima facie insufficient and does not meet the requirements of Lampron and Mass . R. Crim. Page 13 (a)(2)”
This comes after the case resumed on Tuesday, November 26, when the prosecution and defense met and filed several motions in preparation for Read’s retrial.
One of the arguments that Special Prosecutor Hank Brennan presented to Judge Cannone was his request to see the phone records of Read’s parents, William and Janet Read. Brennan has emphasized the importance of what the phone records hold. In a lawsuit, prosecutors argued that “Janet Read’s phone records should be made available for use as potential evidence for impeachment, depending on the testimony of William Read….”
Read’s defense has already called this a “fishing expedition” and “an inappropriate attempt to invade privacy.”
Judge Cannone scheduled Read’s retrial for January 2025.
