Republicans maintained their grip on political power in Missouri and Kansas in the 2024 general election, according to results shared Tuesday night by local election boards and race forecasters from the Associated Press.
While Missourians voted to pass several amendments championed by progressive advocates — including those that overturned the state’s ban on abortion and raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour — Republicans maintained their control of the executive branch of the state and U.S. Senator Josh Hawley’s seat in Congress. . The Republican Party also retained its supermajority in the Kansas state legislature.
Around 1 a.m. on Wednesday, the national election for the president of the United States was too close to call. Former President Donald Trump won 58.1% of the vote in Missouri and 57.2% of the vote in Kansas, securing the Electoral College votes in both states.

Missouri amendments and proposal results
Of Missouri’s six ballots, three passed and one appeared to fail, while two more were too close early Wednesday morning.

Amendment 3 past with 52.6% support, overturning Missouri’s abortion ban and enshrining reproductive rights in the state’s constitution.

Amendment 6, proposing legal fees to finance pensions for law enforcement authorities, turned out to fail with 60.7% voting against it. However, the AP had not called the race as of 1 a.m. Wednesday.

Amendment 7 past with about 68.2% support, banning ranked-choice voting and open primaries, and amending the state constitution to clarify that non-citizens cannot vote in Missouri elections.

Proposal A turned out to pass with 58.1% support, raising Missouri’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2026 and requiring employers to provide sick leave to employees. The AP had not called the race as of 1 a.m. Wednesday.
Amendment 2, which aimed to legalize sports gambling, and Amendment 5, which would have issued an additional casino boat license, were both too close to call early Wednesday morning.

Missouri Senator. Josh Hawley defeated Democratic challenger Lucas Kunce with 54.8% of the vote statewide.

Missouri Rep. Mark Alford (District 4) easily won a second term in Congress with 70.8% of the vote, defeating Democratic challenger Jeanette Cass.

Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (District 5) easily won his 11th term representing Kansas City in the U.S. Congress with 60.2% of the vote, defeating Republican Sean Smith.

Missouri Rep. Sam Graven (District 6) earned 70.7% of the vote to retain his seat in Congress, representing much of northern Missouri, including Northland in Kansas City, and defeating Democratic challenger Pat May.

Kansas representative Tracey Mann defeated Democratic challenger Paul Buskirk with 69.6% of the vote in House District 1, which includes Lawrence.

Republican Dirk Schmidt won the open race for Kansas’ House District 2, which includes parts of Kansas City, Kansas, defeating former U.S. Rep. Nancy Boyda with 57% of the vote.

Kansas representative Sharice Davids defeated Republican challenger Prasanth Reddy with 53.2% of the vote in U.S. House District 3, which includes Johnson County and southern Wyandotte County.
Jackson County and Platte County races

Jackson County voters voted Democrat Melesa Johnson as prosecutor of the province with 57% of the votes. She is the first Black woman to fill the role, defeating Republican Tracey Chappell.

Allyson Berberich won the District 1 seat on the Platte County Commission, leaving all three Commission seats Republican. She received 54% of the vote, defeating Democrat Charles McDonald.

Voters in Kansas City, Kansas approved the sale of $180 million in bonds to finance the revitalization of public school buildings in the district.

Jackson County Voters approved Question 1 with 57.7% of the vote, authorizing a small property tax to fund programs and services for seniors over 60.

Platte County Voters approved the creation of a Children’s Services Fund focused on mental health screenings and resources for children and teens.

Voters in Edwardsville in southwestern Wyandotte County approved an additional sales tax to build a new city hall, police and fire station.

Democratic incumbent Melanie Haas won a second term in District 2, defeating Republican Fred Postlewait.

Republican Connie O’Brien defeated Democrat Kris Meyer in District 4, which includes parts of North Johnson and South Wyandotte counties, along with other parts of eastern Kansas.

Democrat Beryl-Ann New won against Republican Bruce Schultz in District 6, which includes the far northern part of Douglas County, much of Shawnee County and four other counties in eastern Kansas.

Democrat Betty Arnold appeared to win District 8 over Republican Jason Carmichael. However, the Associated Press did not announce the race again until around 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
